In the South, we understand a good rivalry. This month, Naturalist Marianne shows us the rivalries that thrive around us in Russell Forest.

Wildlife Presentations

Woodland Rivalries
Friday, November 26 – 9am-2pm (During Christmas at Crossroads)
Saturday, November 27 – 9am-2pm
Naturalist Cabin at Russell Crossroads

It’s Iron Bowl weekend, and we are thinking of the matching “teams” of predators and prey. Each brings its physical attributes and wits to the field when it comes to survival, and we will compare and contrast the features that help each species achieve victories in Russell Forest. Example: the rabbit’s large ears observe even the quietest of sounds, but the owl’s silent wings are a tool designed to overcome the other team’s defenses! In addition to discussing such forest matchups, we will note that many Russell Forest species have characteristics that are easy to align with those of our favorite athletes. Which species is the kicker, and which is the quarterback? Drop by any time during posted hours and laugh and learn with our Naturalist as we compare forest life to rivalries in the stadium. Program is appropriate for all ages. No charge—everyone is welcome!

Guided Nature Tour

Saturday, November 27 – 3pm
Meet at Wilson Road Trailhead

Family in town? Start this holiday off right by spending time in the woods discovering the variety of woodland offerings we can rightly be THANKFUL for! Consumer goods, foodstuffs, industrial products, and experiences that we value all originate right here in Russell Forest. Join the Russell Lands Naturalist for a walk through the Russell Forest trails with a focus on the role these offerings play in our daily lives and being mindfully thankful of the forest’s gifts. Guided Nature Tours occur at a leisurely pace with plenty of impromptu learning experiences. Expect to spend 1.5–2 hours in the woods.

PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED! There is a $10 fee for this program. Please contact Naturalist Marianne at 256-496-2710 or [email protected] to inquire and to register in advance.

For all Guided Nature Tours: It is recommended that participants have a moderate fitness level and are able to stand or walk for at least two hours. Walking pace will be relaxed with frequent stops. Comfortable, seasonally appropriate clothing and shoes are advised. Participants may also wish to bring bottled water, sunscreen and insect repellent. Binoculars and cameras are welcome. There are no bathrooms on the Forest Trails.
