The Lake Martin Realty Charity Invitational will extend support for needed supplies as the residents and staff at the Tallapoosa County Girls Ranch recover from tragedy and prepare for a new school year. The Ranch provides support for girls and young women via housing, meals, educational support, a “Shop House” where residents may select wardrobe items from donations, access to medical care, and other day-to-day necessities.

The Tallapoosa County Girls Ranch suffered an unimaginable tragedy earlier this summer. On June 19, a group of Ranch residents and staff were returning home from a beach trip to Gulf Shores. Due to severe storms, the Ranch van became part of a major collision. Of the nine persons onboard, only one person survived.

Michael Smith, CEO of the Alabama Sheriffs Youth Ranches, told the Opelika-Auburn News that the girls are “family and sisters.” The loss devastated the residents of the Tallapoosa County Girls Ranch as well as the statewide Youth Ranches family. Smith spoke about how the Ranches have been a place for girls and young women to find a home, stability, and spiritual guidance. The Tallapoosa County Girls Ranch is situated on 200 acres and offers residents an opportunity for community and security. Residents share dorm-like housing with 6-8 other girls and young women per house, with house parents. They share family-style meals, study together, and attend church together.

After the tragedy, Smith spoke of the outpouring of support from the local community as well as from well-wishers from across the state. Financial support helped offset the cost of funerals and medical treatment; numerous groups have visited the Ranch to help take care of building and grounds maintenance and provide essential supplies. Participation in the Lake Martin Realty Charity Invitational will ensure that the Tallapoosa County Girls Ranch continues receiving community love and support. We hope to see you there.
